Glamping in the Lake District, have you tried it?
The Lake District in England is one of my favourite places in the UK. It’s close to my house, and as some of you may have seen on my Instagram, I’ve been spending a bit of time there recently, hiking and wild swimming.
There are so many wonderful places to visit in the Lake District, plus it’s a great place to go ‘glamping’ (one of my other favourite things to do)!
Glamping is basically luxury camping. Unlike traditional camping, where you have to set up a tent and sleep on a roll mat on the floor, glamping is where you stay in a pre-erected tent or a wooden hut or pod, often with proper beds and sometimes a private bathroom. Hence the name ‘glamping’.
These are great for those who want to experience the great outdoors but aren’t quite ready for camping or even wild camping in the Lake District (and perhaps never will be). Plus, the campsites are usually in a stunning location, surrounded by nature, so you’re getting the best of both worlds.
So here are a few suggestions for where to go glamping in the Lake District.

1. The Quiet Site, Ullswater
This is a fabulous, award-winning, carbon-neutral site, close to what’s often called the Lake District’s prettiest lake, Ullswater. Their glamping sites include Hobbit Holes, Gingerbread Houses, Glamping Cabins, Camping Pods, as well as holiday cottages and more traditional pitches.
There is a gorgeous on-site bar, a zero-waste/eco-friendly shop and it’s a dog-friendly site. They even have their own dog shower room with two showers, one for small pooches and one for huge hounds.

2. Kentmere Farm Pods, Windermere
Kentmere offers luxury glamping pods set on a working farm, near Lake Windermere. Each pod has a double bed and sofa bed, making them perfect for families, as well as an ensuite toilet/shower, barbecue, outdoor seating, microwave and fridge.
They also offer art and craft workshops at Cowshed Creative, where you can learn things like photography, painting, collage and jewellery making.

3. Long Valley Yurts, Various Locations
Long Valley Yurts is a great choice for glamping in the Lake District and they have various sites across the region including Coniston, Keswick, Windermere, Ullswater and Eskdale.
Their yurts are absolutely gorgeous and furnished with a Moroccan theme. Each yurt has a kitchen, wood-burning stone for cooking (and keeping warm), raised wooden floors, solar lighting, fairy lights, comfortable beds and a skylight for watching the stars!
They even have Finnish wooden hot tubs for exclusive hire. What more could you ask for?

4. Castlerigg Hall, Keswick
Castlerigg Hall is located just outside of Keswick and close to Derwentwater. As well as being a traditional campsite, they also have a variety of glamping pods for you to choose from.
Each pod sleeps 2 adults, plus 1 or 2 children. Some have beds and private bathrooms, others are more basic, with no beds (byom – bring your own mattress) and have shared bathrooms. They also have space for regular camping, motorhomes, campervans and caravans for hire too.

5. Ewe Love Camping Pods, Troutbeck
This glamping site is set on a small farm in the northern part of the Lake District, with wonderful views of Blencathra, and with only a few pods, it makes the perfect place for a quiet getaway.
Each pod sleeps four people (double bed and a sofa bed) and has an ensuite bathroom, small kitchen and underfloor heating. The farm is just a short drive away from both Keswick and Ullswater, making it a great place to explore the area.

6. Damson View Glamping, Crosthwaite
Check out these gorgeous glamping pods from Damson View Camping, located in Crossthwaite in the Lyth Valley, one of the loveliest parts of the Lakes.
They have 5 luxury pods, each with a private patio and views of Crosthwaite, Cartmel Fell and Whitbarrow Scar. Each pod sleeps 2 people and has a made-up kingsize bed, a bathroom with towels and toiletries, a kitchenette, sofa, dining table and TV. Outside there is seating, a fire pit and views of the village and the hills beyond.
It’s these limestone uplands that help shelter the valley and give it a mild and sunny microclimate, perfect for growing juicy fruit and great for glampers too as the west-facing huts are bathed in sun (when it shines) until it dips below the hills.
If you fancy some activities, there are lots of walks in the immediate area, starting with the farm’s private fell rising up behind the pods. Plus Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and Kendal are only a short drive away.

7. Camp Eden, Penrith
Camp Eden is a rustic camp experience on the Lowther Estate, near Penrith, close to some of the Lake District’s main attractions. You can choose from their Luxury Bell tents, Classic Bell tents, Bedouin tents, Mini Bedouin tents and as well as fancy Royal Indian Shikar tents and space for camping with your own tent.
You can explore the area by bike or by foot, go wild swimming in the River Lowther (which is just a few minutes from the camp) or take a day trip out to nearby Ullswater or Keswick.
In the evenings you can toast marshmallows on the campfire, relax under the stars and enjoy one of their wood-fired pizzas or locally-brewed craft ale.
The camp is open during July and August and has toilets, hot showers and a leave no trace policy.

8. YHA, Hawkshead
The YHA in Hawkshead is a lovely place, with a mix of private rooms, dorms and glamping facilities. The sociable setting means it’s great for meeting other travellers too.
The grounds overlook Esthwaite Water, making for a beautiful setting for their tipis, bell tents, bell tents, camping pods and cabins. They also have glamping spots at some of their other sites including Borrowdale, Coniston & Grasmere.

9. Grasmere Glamping, Grasmere
This site is located on Broadrayne Farm in the heart of the Lake District. Their two hand-built glamping pods have been built to their bespoke design. Each pod has a lounge area with a large sofa, log burning stove, a fitted kitchen, double bed, bathroom under-floor heating, BBQ area and Wi-Fi.
These beautiful pods are available to book all year round for a full week, 3-night weekend or 4-night mid-week break and are suitable for 2 adults (no pets).
The famous Coast to Coast route passes through the farm and the lovely village of Grasmere (famous for its gingerbread) is just a short walk away, plus there are plenty of beautiful walks in the area to keep you busy. If you don’t fancy cooking, the Traveller’s Rest is a short walk away.

10. Hill of Oaks Park, Ulverston
On the shores of Lake Windermere, tucked away in ancient woodland on the southern end of the lake, you’ll find Hill of Oaks Lodge & Caravan Park. They have a mix of glamping pods and safari tents!
All of their glamping accommodation is fully furnished and I would literally live in one of their safari tents (see above) if I could!
The park is right on the water, making it a great place for those interested in water-based activities and it’s also close to some of the Lake District’s best walking routes, including Gummer’s How and Orrest Head.
11. Park Cliffe, Windermere
Park Cliffe is a nice glamping and camping site near to the southeast shore of Lake Windermere.
They have five different styles of glamping pods to choose from including basic pods (bring your own beds/equipment), luxury pods (fully fitted and with private bathroom) some of which include family pods and pet-friendly pods. They also have a super cute shepherd’s hut!
On-site there’s a bar, restaurant, shop, shower/bathroom facilities and a children’s play area. If you don’t fancy sharing you can also hire a private bathroom for £15 per night.

12. Woolpack Farm, Eskdale
Located in the beautiful Eskdale Valley, close to two incredible wild swimming spots, Tongue Pot and Stanley Ghyll Force Waterfall, Woolpack Farm is a great choice if you’re planning to explore this part of the Lakes.
They have two types of glamping accommodation, The Byres and the Woodland Pods. The Byres are luxury glamping lodges, converted from an old farm building, that sleep between 4 – 6 people in each and the Woodland Pods which sleep, 2 adults and 2 children.
In cooking facilities inside the pods (aside from a microwave and a kettle), but you are welcome to bring your own camping stove, but you can also hire a gas/charcoal barbecue.
This site is also home to West Lakes Adventure, one of the best activity companies in the area and they can help you with activities such as ghyll scrambling, SUP hire and rock climbing.

13. Hut in the Sheep Wash, Ulverston
I was originally drawn to this place by the unusual name, but what I found was a very cute, cosy shepherd’s hut set in an idyllic riverside field where sheep were gathered and washed in the river back in the day.
The hut is located 3 miles from the town of Ulverston and just a short drive to Coniston Water and with no TV and no Wi-Fi, it’s the perfect place to get away from it all.
The hut sleeps 2 people and is completely self-contained, with a kitchen area, log burner for chilly days, bathroom and solar panels for charging your laptop or phone. They even have tents for hire if you want to bring the kids.
They provide tea, coffee, sugar as well as cereals and eggs, and they welcome you with cake – how lovely!

14. Wasdale Campsite, Wasdale
Wasdale Campsite is a National Trust property on the shores of glorious Wast Water, is the perfect place for your Lake District glamping adventure as it’s in one of the prettiest places in the Lake District.
They have several fully furnished bell tents and tipis for hire. Each one has a woodburning stove (logs included), a camping stove, pots and pans, some lighting, a table and chairs and a barbecue.
The tents sleep 4 people on a double and 2 single beds, with linen provided. All you need to bring is your own towel and some additional lighting (ie. a head torch) for your stay.

15. The Shepherd Hut at Gowan Bank Farm, Kendal
This is a gorgeous shepherd’s hut located on the Gowan Bank Farm in the village of Ings, close to Lake Windermere.
The hut itself is lovely, built from reclaimed wood, and really is a romantic retreat for two. Inside there’s a fully equipped kitchen, comfy king-size bed, dining area and a wood-burning stove. There’s also an external utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.
If you don’t fancy cooking, The Watermill Inn is just a 5-minute drive/15-minute walk away.

16. Howgills Hideaway, Lowgill
This is a family-run farm on the edge of both the Yorkshire Dales and The Lake District, not too far from Kendal, making it a great place to explore both national parks.
They have an en suite glamping pod, standard glamping pods, a bell tent and caravans for hire. The en suite glamping pod even has an incredible outdoor bath which is big enough for two – how romantic.
Celebrating something? They offer lots of little extras too, such as a pamper package and a celebrations package as well as wonderful food packages which will save you having to do all the prep.

17. The Herdwick Huts, Ambleside
Just a short walk from Rydal Water and Rydal Hall, the Herdwick Huts are a wonderful base in the southern part of the Lake District, close to many of the major attractions and great hikes around Ambleside and Grasmere.
Accommodation is in 5 lovely shepherd’s huts, which are fully equipped for a comfortable holiday. Each one has a double bed, a single bed (sleeps 1 child), a fully-equipped kitchen, a wood-burning stove and they accept one well-behaved dog.
They also hold regular retreats combining glamping in the Lake District with yoga and other holistic practices.

18. Wellington Farm, Cockermouth
Wellington Farm is a family-run farm near Cockermouth in the Western Lake District with stunning views over the surrounding fells.
Their luxury pods are larger than your average glamping pod, but super cosy and with incredible views. They have all the amenities that you need including a kitchen and living area which converts to a sleeping space for 1 adult or 2 children.
But the best thing about Wellington Farm is that each of their pods come with a private Cyclone hot tub. Glamping in the Lake District at its best! On-site is the delightful Wellington Farm Tea Rooms which serves delicious meals throughout the day.
